Sea Monkeys Ruined My Life

Ok, they didn’t really ruin my life, but they are so super weird. My child told me several months ago, “Mom, you must write an article about these weird sea monkies. Title it ‘Sea Monkeys Ruined My Life’ and people will read it.” I guess he was right, because look, you clicked. So while the title is an exaggeration, the rest of this is a totally true story. Last Christmas, my neighbor gave my youngest son the gift that keeps on giving. Excitedly, the eight-year-old ripped open the wrapping paper and read the bold description Sea Monkeys on the front of the brightly-colored box, cartoon creatures frolicking around the words. Mystified, he set it aside and turned to his new toys. What are sea monkeys, I wondered? Must be one of those rubberized toys that expands in water, I concluded, and made a mental note to let him play with them in the bath. Caution: do not let your child play with sea monkeys in the bath. We all forgot about the sea monkeys until a …

The Ministry of Authenticity

My days and nights and weekends are filled with food, family, and book launch. Not always in that order. This week, I’m busy creating fun, pretty, and super-helpful Rocking Ordinary Extras for those of you who pre-order or purchase early. I promise I’ll tell you all about them soon. But while I’m trying hard not to forget to drink coffee (apparently that’s a thing with me now), I wanted to share these words from my friend Carry (I love her blog. Go subscribe). Grab your mug of coffee before you, too, forget it, and share this heart-felt conversation with us I‘ve watched it happen so often: a tired mom walks up to a group of mothers sitting at a table. The chit-chat continues as she sits down and glances slowly from woman to woman. As the conversation turns to more serious topics, perhaps it is her exhaustion that compels her to speak. All eyes turn to her as she tells with a catch in her voice of the trial or perceived failure she is dealing …

Lead Us Not Into Temptation, But Deliver Us from 4pm on Thursdays

Thursdays are the worst days of the week. No argument, it’s just fact. I’m tired from the week, the weekend isn’t close enough, and bad things happen on Thursdays. It’s just the worst. So last Thursday, it all came to a head at 4 p.m. I had been fighting the interwebs for a half an hour, trying to have a facebook live, when I realized that I had no interwebs. As a matter of fact, we had no interwebs, no landline phone, and no television. It’s twenty-first century suburban life in the Dallas metroplex, and I was completely cut off from civilization. And it happened at 4 p.m. This is the worst time of day, the hour in which I regularly turn into a vicious Mom Monster and everyone backs away in fear. I’ve tried everything to cure the 4 p.m. nastiness, but no change of routine, diet, or anything will fix it. This is the way it is, so beware. So of course, it was 4 p.m on a Thursday. I’m in a rush to cook dinner …

Forgiving My Debtors

Forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. In the early morning stillness, the words echoed loudly in my soul. Forgive our debtors. Wait, I had to forgive her? Because she owed me. . . big time. There was a commitment there, Lord. You know that. She made certain promises she didn’t keep. She has obligations to our relationship. She can’t just walk away from that. I’m not the only one who feels that way either, God. I read that email out loud to David yesterday, remember? Am I crazy, or is this just plain WRONG? I asked him. And he agreed with me — just plain wrong. So, there you have it. She totally owes me. I’m right, and she is wrong. We forgive our debtors. I could use some debt forgiveness, Lord. You know those bills on the desk over there, it would be great if the creditor would just call up and say, “Never mind. We don’t care about this any more. Just tear it up and go about your business and don’t give it …
