The Books – Ten Girls from History  and Ten Great Adventurers

Ten Girls from History

From the author of Uncover Exciting History come two great resources that bring history to life. Ten Girls from History and Ten Great Adventurers presents heroes, role models, and pioneers to cherish and research.

Both Ten Girls from History and Ten Great Adventurers contain the original 1915 book by Kate Dickinson, slightly edited by Amy Puetz for students ten and up. The women profiled in Ten Girls from History include Indian princess Cofachiqui, colonial heroine Madeleine De Vercheres, and Civil War spy Elizabeth Van Lew. The men of the Ten Great Adventurers include British pirate Sir Francis Drake, missionary adventurer David Livingston, and patriot John Paul Jones.  Each chapter profile is told as a story, telling the tale of the hero’s life in rich detail. Both books include a glossary to easily reference the bold vocabulary words within the stories. At the close of the book, a timeline helps the student understand when each person lived in relation to each other. Many chapters include photos, and the boys’ book even contains maps for following the adventurers’ travels.

Ten Great Adventurers

My own son and daughter thoroughly enjoyed reading these books. They first became excited about history when I read aloud Amy Puetz’s other works to them, so they were each thrilled she has produced books specifically for boys and girls. They were pleased to learn more about characters they had read of before, and they were very excited about the stories of heroes they had never heard of before. When I asked to read the books for myself, the answer was, “Will you give it right back?”

Ten Girls from History and Ten Great Adventurers make excellent additions to the homeschool reference bookshelf. Whatever method of history teaching or curriculum, these books provide supplementary reading and research while instilling a love for the stories of history and the character of true heroes. And isn’t that what history is all about?

The Author – Amy Puetz

Amy Puetz

Amy Puetz (pronounced Pitts) is a homeschool graduate, a self-taught historian, and a servant of Jesus Christ. History has been a passion for her since childhood. Years of in-depth study (both in modern and old sources) have equipped her to write history-related books. Amy Puetz is the author of Uncover Exciting History: Revealing America’s Christian Heritage in Short, Easy-to-Read Nuggets and Countdown to Christmas: Memory Making Stories and Activities for Every Day from December 1st to the 25th. As a columnist for Home School Enrichment Magazine she shares stories about historical events from a Christian worldview. She especially loves to dig for little-known stories that show God’s providential hand. Because of a chronic illness (fibromyalgia) that limits what she can do, the Lord led her to start an online business which she can do from home. She is the author of several e-books. In her spare time she enjoys sewing and reading. Visit her Web site at www.AmyPuetz.com to see many resources relating to history and to read her statement of faith. She also publishes a bimonthly e-zine for ladies of all ages, called Heroines of the Past.
